Personal Policy NPO Beppu Hatto Trust In 1950, the then Governor of Beppu City, Mr. Tetsuichi Waki, enacted a new construction method called "Beppu International tourism-hot spring-cultural city". It is still applied today. Beautiful natural scenery and hot-springs are the main attractions of Beppu City. Hot springs are the pride of Beppu as it boasts to be the world's number one in hot springs. As many as 130,000 tons of water gush out of these hot springs every day, enough to provide every Beppu citizen, be it a newborn baby or an elderly citizen, with five barrels of hot-spring water per day. There are 11 kinds of hot springs in the world and Beppu City has 10 of them. Their daily use can lead to a disease-free, long healthy life. Moreover, along with the glorious natural environment, it could be said that Beppu is a city blessed by God. As the Director of the Beppu-Hatto Trust, I have devoted myself to the creation of citizen-friendly city planning of Beppu. The main objective of the Trust is to purchase natural sites and historical "monumental" buildings (via fund raising activities), and preserve and maintain them. Furthermore, as a volunteer guide of "Kataribunokai" (professional reciters' gathering/association), we have share and educated not only tourists but also local citizens of the charm and beauty of Beppu City. For the past 4 years, after 600 walks and feedback obtained from more than 5000 tourists from various areas, we have been educating ourselves of the essentials for the development of Beppu. What are the expectations of the visitors of Beppu? "There is a fine mixture of new buildings along with historical buildings", "Its chaotic atmosphere makes it very interesting", "the old back alleys full of flavors look very pleasant", "the fragrance of the hot springs is tasteful, and heals your mind", "I was amazed to see so many hot springs, especially in unexpected places", "hearts of the people in Beppu are as warm as the hot springs" etc. These voices have encouraged us to promote Beppu even more as it brings harmony to people's hearts. Unfortunately, compared to the past this great city has become vague and the great features of Beppu were lost. Gradually, Beppu is losing the landmark architecture which was created even before World War II: the scenic alleys, the beautiful rows of ancient houses along with the city streets, and nature. These valuable properties should be preserved for the future generations. However, we are facing the danger of losing them. The efforts of the government and other private enterprises to protect the historical values of Beppu are overwhelming. Yet it is not enough. We have to act steadily and swiftly with long-term goals and strategies. It is important to obtain the understanding and the support of the people in order to preserve this city. Fortunately, it has been possible to build strong relationships with the local citizens and gain their support to preserve this city. These activities should not be limited only to Beppu. Through these kinds of activities we wish that all citizens in every city beyond national borders would start to value their heritage and try to protect it. We strongly believe our actions have caused major global problems such as environmental issues, education problems, and natural resources problems and if each an every one of us will start contributing to protect the place we live in, the future will be bright. We wish that one day every citizen of the planet will start loving his or her own town and will contribute to keep it a lively place. Therefore, we hope that you too will start contributing to the place you live. |
